All too often, books in the fantasy genre all centre the same perspectives. The protagonists are usually white and young Westerners who are the chosen ones, destined to save the world before they’ve turned 25. The eponymous Amina of The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi is none of these things and her story is all the more interesting for it.

When we meet Amina, she is a retired pirate with a sketchy past and a notorious reputation, trying to live a quiet life in order to keep her young daughter safe. However, when the opportunity to return to the seas of the Indian Ocean arises, Amina feels the undeniable pull of adventure. 

In the midst of an adventurous tale of swashbuckling pirates, magical objects, and mythical worlds, Chakraborty weaves in themes of motherhood, identity, and faith. Amina’s crew is full of colourful characters, and the story is told in such a way that you feel as if you’re one of them, sat around the table in a pub. The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi has all the hallmarks of a classic quest fantasy but with the new and exciting elements of Islamic history and mythology that fans will recognise from Chakraborty’s Daevabad trilogy. It is an excellent start to a trilogy that promises to be fun, thrilling, and enchanting.
